eBook Release: Communication strategist helps "political-opposites" stop arguing and start communicating 2/04/2008 Political conversations don’t have to be divisive and hostile, according to the new eBook, Unite and Concur: How to stop arguing and start communicating about politics. Author and Communication Strategist Meryl Runion shows how the same techniques that communication experts apply in negotiation and diversity training can help “political opposites” have productive political conversations. “People are angry, frustrated and disheartened by the level of divisiveness in political discourse,” Runion says. “It’s natural to get angry, but I say, ‘Don’t get angry – get strategic.’” The first step, according to the eBook Unite and Concur, is to understand the factors that contribute to the divisive nature of political dialogue. Those factors include primal and emotional reactions, divergent values, distorted information and a national climate of divisive communication that trickles down to individual conversations. “Where would we learn how to have productive political dialogue?” Runion asks. “Our national political dialogue is insane. And it will stay that way until reasonable people decide they’ve had enough and get strategic.” The second step, Runion explains, is to become a Deception Detective. That means learning to recognize logical fallacies, resisting communication domination tactics and applying critical thinking. “Once you know how information gets distorted, deceptive tactics become transparent,” Runion says. The final step is to change the game into one that isn’t stacked against you. You do that by setting boundaries, finding common ground, and making compelling arguments. “It’s not as hard as you think to discuss politics,” Runion suggests. “You just need to remember, when someone says something that makes you angry, don’t get mad, get strategic.” Meryl Runion is the author of four books on communication that have sold over a quarter of a million copies worldwide.
