Fact-check.org is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, "consumer advocate" for
voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S.
politics. They monitor the factual accuracy of what major U.S. political
players say in TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews, and news
releases. Their goal is to apply the best practices of both journalism and
scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding.
The Annenberg Political Fact Check is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. The APPC was established by publisher and philanthropist Walter Annenberg in 1994 to create a community of scholars within the University of Pennsylvania that would address public policy issues at the local, state, and federal levels. The APPC accepts no funding from business corporations, labor unions, political parties, lobbying organizations or individuals. It is funded primarily by the Annenberg Foundation.
Snopes aims to debunk or confirm widely spread urban legends, including political ones. News media and other sites refer to Snopes as evidence of accuracy or inaccuracy of reports. Some chain e-mail hoaxes falsely claim that to have been "checked out on 'Snopes.com'" to discourage readers from seeking verification.
Where appropriate, pages are generally marked "undetermined" or "unverifiable" if the hosts feel there is not enough evidence to either support or disprove a given claim.
Opensecrets.org is the site for: The Center for Responsive Politics. CFRP is a non-partisan, non-profit research group based in Washington, D.C. that tracks money in politics, and its effect on elections and public policy. It’s the place to go to find out which lobbyists support which candidates. The Center conducts computerbased research on campaign finance issues for the news media, academics, activists, and the public at large. The Center’s work is aimed at creating a more educated voter, an involved citizenry, and a more responsive government.
Support for the Center comes from a combination of foundation grants and individual contributions. The Center accepts no contributions from businesses or labor unions.
The Congressional Budget Office, or CBO's mandate is to provide the Congress with:
• Objective, nonpartisan, and timely analyses to aid in economic and
budgetary decisions on the wide array of programs covered by the
federal budget, and
• The information and estimates required for the Congressional
budget process.
Lawmakers from both parties rely on it for analysis of economic trends.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) is known as "the investigative arm of Congress" and "the congressional watchdog." The GAO supports the Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities. It helps improve the performance and ensure the accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people. The GAO's work includes oversight of federal programs; insight into ways to make government more efficient, effective, ethical and equitable; and foresight of long-term trends and challenges.
